Harvest 2023: Teamwork? No, of one big family

For Pieve di Campoli, the grape harvest is one of the most heartfelt and anticipated moments of the year. It is a gathering and gathering occasion that features the workers, those people who make a difference and are at the center of the mission of the company owned by the Diocesan Institute for the Support of the Clergy.

When the word grape harvest is mentioned a warm smile appears on Marco Bussagli 's face . The mind pops with memories with the strength and intensity reserved for important things. For him, a historical worker at the winery, the time of the grape harvest has represented a crucial stage of the year since 1987. "We have always lived this passage with great anticipation. The harvest is not just the simple picking of the grapes that have reached maturity, but it is also an occasion for gathering, teamwork and fraternal friendship among the people who participate, both inside and outside the company." A ritual that seems destined to leave its mark, to embed itself each time in the memory of those who experience it through episodes of daily life where, step by step, fatigue is mixed with the joy of being together and teamwork becomes the work of a large family.

The best thing was the relationship with my team. The jokes, chatter and jokes lightened the fatigue

That was the case again this year. In the 50 hectares of land where the winery is located, the harvest took its course amid initial perplexity, logistical efforts and great satisfaction. From the end of August to the end of September, two teams of workers were engaged in the harvesting activity, starting with the grapes destined for the production of rosé and then moving on to Merlot and, finally, to Sangiovese destined for the processing of Chianti Classico. Among them are familiar faces of the company but also new recruits such as Giacomo Cini, who joined the group of workers who with dedication and perseverance take care of the farmland of the Diocesan Institute for the Support of the Clergy. "I come from a family of farmers and grew up in the fields," Giacomo explains, "so it was natural for me to choose this job." And for him, too, the time of the grape harvest seems not to have passed in vain. "It was a beautiful, memorable time. The weather and sunny days made our lives easier by not forcing us to have to harvest in the rain. But the best thing was the relationship with my team. The jokes, chats and jokes lightened the fatigue making it almost a pleasure." Passion therefore is not dead but continues, in this heavenly corner of Tuscany, to unite different generations through a way of working that Pieve di Campoli wants to preserve, aware of the centrality of each individual person. "We hope that the grape harvest," Bussagli concludes, "will continue to be a moment of community and encounter in the coming years and that it can also involve new people, especially the local youth.

Finally, even at the production level the results were very good. Contrary to what happened in many areas of Chianti and Tuscany, the vines were spared from the Peronospora attack and returned grapes of great quality. Someone spoke of luck while someone else alluded to some sort of divine protection. We are not given to know the truth but in the end it does not matter too much. What matters is the result and the result is beyond expectations. Also this year the wines of Pieve di Campoli will leave their mark expressing all their richness and potential.
