Every bottle its UGA:
when uniqueness is linked to territories

At the heart of Chianti Classico to highlight all the nuances of the terroir that from hamlet to hamlet contributes to the creation of highly identifiable wines, capable of reflecting the geography and history of the place of origin. This is the UGA project, which as of July 2023 allows the specific area of wine production to be indicated on the label in addition to the Black Rooster.

United States and Hong Kong as the next horizon and then Turkey, Singapore, Japan, England and the Netherlands, where the Pieve di Campoli and Cortine lines are already present. "The internationalization of wine," explains Andrea Paoletti, the company's technical director, "is a process in which we believe a lot and on which we want to continue to push in the coming years. A project that certainly has the contours of a particular challenge, more cultural than logistical. There are difficulties, of course, the main ones having to do with a fact that is difficult to get around on one's own: a poorly educated consumer who gets lost very easily in the magnum sea of wine offerings. "Chianti Classico equals Chianti" is a persistent association abroad. A risky homologation that not only undermines the geographic identity of Chianti Classico itself but also ends up flattening two territories that are different in terms of borders, characteristics, traditions, including disciplinary." The Black Rooster, the Consortium's historic symbol, would not seem to be sufficient to distinguish the wine produced between the provinces of Florence and Siena from bottles made in the wider Chianti area. The solution? "A work of popularization and awareness that fully enhances the territories of origin where Classico is produced."

The internationalization of wine is a process in which we strongly believe and on which we want to continue to push

In this sense, a certain kind of path has already begun. In June 2021, the assembly of members of the Chianti Classico Consortium approved by a large majority the UGA project, a subdivision of the Black Rooster territory into 11 areas with the aim of enhancing the characteristics that distinguish and make the denomination unique, starting from the area where it originates . San Casciano, Montefiorale, Panzano, San Donato in Poggio, Castellina, Vagliagli, Greve, Lamole, Radda and Castelnuovo Berardegna, are the strips of land identified after a long work through precise criteria such as oenological recognizability, historicity, notoriety and significance in terms of production volumes. The result is an additional wording on the label that will indicate not only the Black Rooster symbol, but also the micro area of production. The addition will allow the consumer to tie the wine to a specific territory and at the same time allow each UGA to establish itself within the Consortium for those characteristics that make them unique. A way to differentiate production within the same territory but also a way capable of making each individual production even more unique.

Wine as a negative image, an increasingly faithful reflection of a territory, of its physical and climatic characteristics but also of its historical traditions. "It is a historic step in terms of the Consortium's journey so far ," Paoletti says with his usual discretion, "which is certainly not for me to comment on. But I can say that the direction is the right one to differentiate our wines more on the market and defend them from possible misunderstandings.

Of course, we are still in our infancy and as we all know in agriculture it takes years before a job brings results." At the moment, in fact, not all bottles produced according to the Chianti Classico disciplinary will show on the labels the UGA of origin but only the Gran Selezione type , which according to the disciplinary is produced with grapes from a single vineyard or from a selection of the best grapes with a minimum aging of 30 months. Onward, then, with the Cortine line, which among its references also boasts a Gran Selezione, the jewel in the crown, ready to shine and make its mark on the foreign market by bringing all the richness and history of the terroir of the hamlet of the same name.
