Pugnitello: a unique wine, smelling of sacrifice and rediscovery

Like few other Chianti Classico estates, Pieve di Campoli is proud to present Pugnitello IGT, the result of the pure vinification of the native Tuscan variety that was thought to have disappeared for good.

Drinking a glass of Pugnitello IGT Pieve di Campoli is an intense and somehow exclusive experience. The ruby red color and violet hues enrapture the eyes while the full flavor enchants the palate. But its richness and uniqueness lies not only in its organoleptic values, but extends to a story, to a double register of events and episodes, in which the line between existing and nonexistent is very thin. A story in which man makes the difference through curiosity, tenacity, and an inexhaustible passion for challenges.

The Pugnitello of Pieve di Campoli was planted and cultivated on the Vigna della Cipressa , an area that, as already told in a previous story, seemed to deny, with its expanse of rocks, any possibility of dwelling. The months of constant struggle with the land seemed reminiscent of the vicissitudes of Adam Trask, protagonist of John Steinbeck's The Valley of Eden , who works assiduously so that his paradise on earth can flourish. And so after countless efforts the Cypress Vineyard came into being: a monument to hard work and beauty. An ideal place to host a peculiar variety, the result of years of research and work.

A native Tuscan variety that for years was thought to have permanently disappeared.

When it comes to Pugnitello the line between existing and nonexistent is very thin. It is in fact an indigenous Tuscan variety that for years was thought to have definitively disappeared. Pugnitello is a black grape variety whose identification in the past was already quite confusing: often mistaken for Sangiovese because of the shape of the similar but smaller grains, at other times it was traced back to Montepulciano. Because of its low productivity it slowly disappeared, also helped by the arrival of large international grape varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. In the late 1980s, however, there was a reversal. The University of Florence launched a major project to research the genetic heritage of Tuscany's native grape varieties, which led to the rediscovery of the variety in the hills of Grosseto.

That is why we say that drinking a glass of Pugnitello IGT is a rare experience. At the moment Pieve di Campoli is one of the few bottlers of pure Pugnitello and, with 12 months of barrique aging, delivers an exceptional product within the vast and populated Chianti Classico panorama.
